Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS) initiative launched at COP26 Summit in Glasgow

  • The Small Island Developing States or SIDS face the biggest threat from climate change.
  • To mitigate this, India’s space agency ISRO will build a special data window for them to provide them timely information about cyclones, coral-reef monitoring, coast-line monitoring etc. through satellite.
  • It is a joint programme between the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) member countries and Sids.
  • IRIS will be a part of the India-UK Coalition for Disaster Resilient infrastructure (CDRI).
  • While Britain has announced an initial £10 million (S$18.4 million) contribution to the fund, India and Australia have committed US$10 million each.
  • Expected to be rolled out in the first half of 2022, the programme has budgeted US$50 million as of now for its activities until 2030.
  • It has three key target outcomes: improving disaster and climate resilience of infrastructure, strengthening knowledge and partnerships for resilient infrastructure, and promoting gender equality as well as disability inclusion through its activities.

The CDRI, comprising countries, United Nations agencies, multilateral development banks and other stakeholders, was launched by India at the UN Climate Action Summit in September 2019 in New York.

  • The coalition currently has 28 member countries, including the United States, Germany, Fiji, Canada, Mauritius, the Maldives and the Dominican Republic.
  • The SIDS are a group of 58 low-lying island nations severely threatened by climate change and rising sea levels.

Defense Acquisition Council, headed by Raksha Mantri approved proposals worth Rs 7,965 crore

  • All of these proposals (100%) are under ‘Make in India’ with focus on design, development and manufacturing in India.
  • Key approvals of procurement from domestic sources include twelve Light Utility Helicopters from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)

Ministry of Rural Development signs MoU with Flipkart

  • Flipkart, India’s homegrown e-commerce marketplace, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Rural Development of the Government of India (MoRD), for their ambitious Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) program, to help empower local businesses and self-help groups (SHGs) – especially those that are led by women – by bringing them into the e-commerce fold
  • The MoRD’s DAY-NRLM programme with its outreach in 6768 blocks of 706 districts across all 28 States and 6 UTs has 7.84 crore women mobilized into more than 71 lakh SHGs is proving as the game-changing initiative to empower poor rural women.
  • The Flipkart Samarth initiative provides them with access to potentially more than 350 million consumers on our platform spread across the country.

‘Ayushmaan CAPF’ Scheme

  • The Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah today launched the ‘Ayushmaan CAPF’ Scheme health cards at the national level
  • Union Home Minister had launched ‘Ayushmaan CAPF’ Scheme on Pilot basis in the State of Assam on 23rd January, 2021 to provide healthcare services to all Central Armed Police Force (CAPFs) personnel and their dependents.
  • The Scheme is a joint initiative of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and National Health Authority (NHA)

CCI approves acquisition by HDFC Life Insurance Company of 100% shareholding in Exide Life Insurance Company Limited

  • The deal was inked for ₹6,687 crore, allowing the country’s most valuable private insurer to bolster its presence in south India.
  • Earlier this year, India cleared a plan to raise foreign direct investment in insurance to 74% from 49% to help local insurers meet their growing capital requirements.
