Green Grid - OSOWOG - OSOWOG is a specific work programme to realize the objectives of the ISA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson have launched a ‘green grids’ initiative—the One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG) project—on the sidelines of the COP26 summit.

  • OSOWOG is about connecting the Renewable Energy Supply (producers/generators) all across the world through trans-national transmission lines, so that the energy/electricity produced from the renewable sources (solar, wind...) can be transmitted around the world.

As the solar power is not generated/produced after the sun sets, so the transnational grid would allow countries to source solar power from regions where it is day time to meet their green energy needs even when their own installed solar capacity is not generating energy.

  • OSOWOG is also aimed at addressing the issue of high cost of energy storage. The high cost of energy storage is a key challenge to boosting the use of renewable energy and that the OSOWOG initiative is a possible solution for driving down the need for storage, which in effect will reduce the costs of the energy transition.
  • But this would require huge capital investment to build the transmission lines across the world. So the first step of OSOWOG is to transfer/transmit solar power among neighboring countries where transmission lines are already connected. (India, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar share transmission capacity for energy transfer across border).

New Climate Change Targets Announced by PM Modi at COP26

  • First- India will reach its non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030.
  • Second- India will meet 50 percent of its energy requirements from renewable energy by 2030.
  • Third- India will reduce the total projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes from now onwards till 2030.
  • Fourth- By 2030, India will reduce the carbon intensity of its economy by less than 45 percent.
