AG Thankappan Appointed as Chairman of Spices Board

  • AG Thankappan is the new Chairman of Spices Board, Kochi. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed him at this position for a period of three years. 

About Spices Board of India

  • The Spices Board of India, headquartered in Kochi, is the Indian government's regulatory and export promotion agency for spices. 
  • It was founded in the year 1987 under Spices Board Act, 1986. 
  • Its responsibilities included the production and development of cardamom and the export promotion of 52 spices named in the Act.

Dept. of Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Dept. of Rural Development Sign MoU for Enhancement of Both Sectors

Atul Chaturvedi, Secretary, Department of Animal husbandry and Dairying and N.N. Sinha, Secretary, Department of  Rural Development signed an MoU for Leveraging SHG platform for rural economic growth at Krishi Bhawan in the presence of Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Giriraj Singh, Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj. 

  • Dr. L. Murugan, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Faggan Singh Kulaste, Minister of State for Rural Development and Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Minister of State for Rural Development were also present. 

Objectives of the Association: 

Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala highlighted that the Dovetailing and synergizing efforts of the DAHD and the DRD especially in the context of the common objective of helping the farmers and double their income through the livestock sector is the need of the hour. 

  • As per the MoU, it has also decided to use the services of the members of the SHGs as livestock resource persons and primary service provider through a new accredited model named as “A-HELP” (Accredited Agent for Health and Extension of Livestock Production). 
  • This model will be implemented across the country by using the existing cadre developed under DAY-NRLM for livestock (Pashusakhis) by providing further training and accreditation as A-HELP worker. 

ICAR Awards TNAU for Its Research on Mushroom

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has been honoured for its contributions in mushroom research by ICAR (Indian Council for Agricultural Research). 

  • The All India Coordinated Research Project on Mushrooms has been operating under the auspices of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in the Department of Plant Pathology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. 
  • Founded in 1971, Tamil Nadu Agricultural Institution (TNAU) is an agricultural university in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. The university is accredited by the UGC and operates under the direction of the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Education. 

SBI Plans To Disburse Rs. 3 Lakh Crore in Agriculture Finance By FY24

Through its YONO Krishi platform, SBI is harnessing the agri-fintech ecosystem to alter the way agricultural loans are granted and renewed.

  • Farmers may now renew their Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans with four clicks on the app, according to Challa Sreenivasulu Setty, Managing Director, SBI, who oversees the agricultural and rural sectors. 
  • SBI aims to grow its agriculture sector business to Rs 3 lakh crore by FY24, up from the current Rs 2.15 lakh crore. 

CIFT to Provide Online International Training for Fisheries Industry

The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT) will offer a series of online international training sessions for a selected number of overseas government officials engaged in the agricultural sector from AARDO member nations in Africa and Asia. 

  • The training program, which includes subjects based on harvest and post-harvest fisheries, as well as value chain management in fisheries, is conducted in collaboration with the African-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO), located in New Delhi. 
  • In the past week, CIFT has developed a technology to convert fish waste into aqua feed. 

Tata-Cornell Institute Launches Hub for FPOs

The Tata-Cornell Institute (TCI) for Agriculture and Nutrition has launched a hub for Farmer Producer Organizations in its Center of Excellence in New Delhi on Wednesday. 

  • The Hub, which has been created with grant support from the Walmart Foundation, will act as a repository of learnings, information, and expertise for the growth of FPOs in India
  • Bringing together data on India's approximately 4,400 FPOs would assist research targeted at creating robust, successful FPO models
  • The Walmart Foundation has given a $1 million grant to the newly formed FPO Hub.

Mukhyamantri Khet Suraksha scheme of Madhya Pradesh

Horticulture Department of the State Government will provide subsidy to the farmers for getting the wire fencing of the fields done under the “Mukhyamantri Khet Suraksha” scheme.

  • The Department of Horticulture will provide a subsidy of 50 to 70 percent for chain fencing or wire fencing of the fields.

Govt Allows Import of 1.2 MT of Soymeal

Centre on Tuesday relaxed norms to allow import of 12 lakh tonnes of deoiled and crushed genetically modified (GM) soybean as poultry feed with the environment ministry (MoEFCC) showing green flag as there is no concern from the environmental angle as it does not contain any living organism.

  • The relaxation of the import norms will benefit poultry farmer and fishermen who have been badly affected after soyameal prices surged across the country. The imports will be allowed till October 31.

Philippines, First Country to Approve Commercialization of Golden Rice

After getting regulatory approval, Filipino farmers will be the first in the world to produce a type of rice fortified with nutrients to aid in the reduction of childhood malnutrition. 

  • Golden Rice was developed by the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute (DA-PhilRice) in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to contain added levels of beta-carotene that the body converts into vitamin A.
  • Golden rice has been genetically modified to give up to 50% of a young child's estimated average need (EAR) for vitamin A, the age group most vulnerable to VAD in the Philippines.
  • Vitamin A deficiency (VAD), which impacts an estimated 190 million children globally. The disease is the leading cause of childhood blindness and a contributing factor in a compromised immune system. 

Telangana to Launch “Saagu Baagu” to Promote Innovation in Agriculture & Horticulture

  • Telangana government is going to launch a new project called “Saagu Baagu” for agriculture advancement.
  • The main purpose of this project is to utilize artificial intelligence to boost the agriculture sector of the state.
  • The Saagu-Baagu project is the first public- private initiative for agriculture technology in India to achieve innovative ease of use in the fields of agriculture and horticulture. 

APEDA Collaborates with HPMC to Export Unique Variety of Mango to Bahrain 

  • In continuance with its thrust on promoting the agricultural and processed food products exports to the newer destinations, APEDA collaboration with Himachal Pradesh Horticultural Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation Ltd (HPMC) exported the first consignment consisting of five unique varieties of apples and these are – Royal Delicious, Dark Baron Gala, Scarlet Spur, Red Velox & Golden Delicious to Bahrain.

Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare celebrated World Coconut Day on Thursday to commemorate the foundation day of the International Coconut Community, an inter-governmental organization of coconut producing countries under the aegis of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, UN-ESCAP

  • India has made great progress in the field of coconut and it is at the fore in production and productivity and ranks third in the world
  • The production of coconut in the country stood at 21,207 million nuts during 2020-21, which is 34 per cent of the global production.
  • The Minister said, the productivity is 9687 nuts per hectare, which is the highest in the world
  • The theme for the 23rd World Coconut Day celebrations this year is Building a safe, inclusive resilient and sustainable coconut community amid COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
  • Coconut Development Board is a statutory body established on 12th Jan 1981 in Kochi, Kerala under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of India for the integrated development of coconut and coconut-related products.
